recent story

Welcome to this website!

On this website you will be able to find information on my educational background, as well as clinical and academic work. If you are a current or prospective patient, you will be happy to browse the Patient Info page, while current students or researchers of Chinese medicine will be excited to learn about the upcoming educational and research projects on the Continuing Education page.

Also worth mentioning is the Canonical Chinese Medicine training that started in April 2007 and is now being offered in multiple locations all over the world. In Europe the training is finishing its 2nd year soon in the UK. Another group recently started in Portland, OR, USA and yet another group will be starting in 09/2008 in the San Francisco Bay area. Furthermore, in 2009, the newly enhanced and expanded Canonical curriculum will kick-off its debut in Frankfurt, Germany. More info can be found here.

Also since 2007 I am offering diagnostic medicine support for any Chinese medicine practitioner who has as if it were "run in to a dead end" with a challenging patient. You can request to schedule an appointment for a thorough Chinese medicine diagnostic assessment and receive a written 'second opinion' on possible herbal and acupuncture avenues to pursue, along with treatment plan and prognosis. Man colleagues have already succesfully used this service and made breakthroughs in some of their stubborn cases!Click here for more info.

The Forum page has since almost three years been a one-of-a-kind venue for scholarly exchange amongst peers both domestic and internationally. Please do not hesitate to sign-up and start posting. It is the place to see and be seen!

Whatever brings you here, I sincerely hope you enjoy the visit!

Thank you,

Arnaud Versluys, PhD, L.Ac.

NEWS: Portland and San Francisco SHL Dates Announced for 2010

IMG_2505.jpg

This week the Jingui series in Portland and San Francisco are off to a great start. Attendance this year is high and so are spirits. Welcome to all new Canonical family members!

The Seattle course this year was cancelled due to low attendance. Unfortunately, the number if registrations did not justify the organization. We are hoping to attempt a Seattle offering again some time next year. If you are from Seattle or would like to attend a Seattle offering, please email info@arnaudversluys.com to put your name on a preliminary list. As far as we can foresee, there will be no offering of a SHL curriculum in Seattle in 2010 and 2011 would be the earliest. If you are interested in attending sooner, then please join us in Portland. Thanks.

Lastly, many students in Portland are requesting to bump up the offering of the next Shanghan Lun sequence in Portland. We have therefore preliminarily started compiling a list of names of people interested. The proposed dates will be out soon but should start around March or April 2010, immediately after the Portland Jingui series is finished. Free Video Lecture on Formula Modification

The followng video lecture was recorded in Portland, in January 2009, during the recent Shanghan Lun sequence of the Canonical Chinese Medicine curriculum offering. In the lecture, Dr. Versluys discusses the complex phsychology behind knee-jerk, non-classical formula modification and offers some ways of awareness and mindfulness to counter it. Also discussed is the nature of Zhang Zhongjing's formula modification system as a safe way to prevent fear-based psychology in clinical behavior. Enjoy!

Shanghan Lun Course in Australia- Reservations in Full Swing!

seminar_promo.jpg

In this seminar, three practitioners, Dan Bensky, Craig Mitchel, and Arnaud Versluys, who have long-term engagement with
the Shanghan Lun and the tradition surrounding it, will discuss in depth the
core elements of this seminal work, delving into its structure and
design, and presenting some ways in which its approach to diagnosis and
treatment can be of great use in the modern clinic.

Seminar One: Arnaud Versluys will teach the first
weekend. He will provide an introduction to the SHL to frame the later
material, so that participants will have the necessary construct into
which they can fit more complex information. He will start by
presenting a clear perspective into the core physiological qualities of
the confirmations as rooted in the five movements (wu yun) and six qi (liu qi) in nature. This will be explained through two important concepts from
the Huang Di Neijing, namely Manifestation-Root-Middle Qi (biao ben zhongqi) and the Opening-Closing-Pivoting (kai he shu).
These fundamental theories will allow the student to gain insight into
the dynamics behind the clinical manifestations of the conformation
diseases as well as their rules of pattern transmutation.

The basic lines of the SHL are
considered to form an “outline” of the text. These will be explained
from the aforementioned perspectives paving the way for more clinical
explanations during the second weekend. In these lines, the reader
discovers the basic presentations, including the pulse and main
symptoms associated with each of the primary patterns. Having a
detailed understanding of these lines is critical to understanding the
SHL, because it is through this focused lens that both beginners and
practitioners with experience in Chinese herbal medicine can grapple
with the understanding of physiology that is unique to the SHL.
In the latter part of the first weekend, Arnaud will introduce some of
the core views on pulse diagnosis as employed by the SHL. He will use
strategically chosen excerpts from two of the original introductory
chapters of “Methods for Pulse Differentiation» and “Methods for Pulse
Assessment.” Arnaud will provide a basic introduction to the concept of
pulse patterns that form the core diagnostic parameters in the
establishment of the formula patterns by which the SHL practitioner
categorizes disease and therapy.

MELBOURNE — 2009 March 14-15, May 2-3, July 4-5

SYDNEY — 2009 March 21-22, May 9-10,July 11-12

These courses have been designed as a unit. Each weekend interlocks
with the others and should be taken in sequence and viewed as one
course. Case analysis will be an integral part of all three weekends
and participants are invited to bring cases for possible discussion
during classes.
